A Beaverton, Oregon swim coach was arrested last week on charges of sexually abusing at least two young girls.
According to Sgt. Bob Ray of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office the girls, both under the age of eight, were believed to have been “inappropriately touched…in a secluded room at the Sunset Athletic Club after their swim lesson on Monday, June 23, 2014.”
The swim coach, 17-year-old Mitchell Alan Douglas Kelly, faces first degree sexual assault charges and will be charged as an adult. He is currently being held on $250,000 bail. Police strongly believe that Kelly may have more victims and are urging anyone with information on him to come forward to authorities. Kelly also taught how-to-swim classes at the Sunset Swim Center. “The children were basically taken out of the main pool area,” said Ray, “off to another part of the building.”
According to a statement released by the Sunset Athletic Club, they had never received any complaints about Kelly prior to his arrest. USA Swimming has also mentioned that Kelly could not have been a coach-member with the organization since it requires that all coach-members be at least 18 years of age. Coach-members with USA Swimming are also required to complete a background check before coaching, though, at this time, it is unknown whether Kelly had been background screened.
The Sunset Athletic Club is cooperating with police while the investigation continues.
