A computer teacher and basketball coach with the Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School in Green Bay, Wisconsin, faces five charges of criminal sexual assault against a 13-year-old student.
The coach, Wayne Makela, 27, was arrested last Wednesday when the mother of the victim discovered disturbing texts of a sexual nature from the coach on her son’s phone. Makela, who also served as the school’s youth director, faces charges of second-degree sexual assault of a child, use of a computer to facilitate a child sex crime, child enticement, sexual assault by a school staff person or a person who works or volunteers with children, and exposing a child to harmful materials of harmful descriptions or narrations.
Though the Pilgrim Lutheran Church and School have released a statement expressing their sorrow over the case, they have not provided any information into Makela’s current employment status.
Makela had worked with Pilgrim Lutheran for the past six years and is married with one young child and another on the way. Police are currently investigating the seized electronic devices belonging to Makela in an effort to uncover more evidence and discover if there may have been more victims.
