A California golf coach with a prestigious reputation has been arrested for molesting at least three children, although authorities caution that the number of victims may rise.
Andrew Michael Nisbet was the PGA Golf Pro for the Las Positas Golf Course in Livermore, CA since 2006 where he coached children who often went on to compete in national and state-wide tournaments. Over the years, Nisbet has organized clinics and golf tournaments for kids and coached children in several states across the U.S. He was also listed as one of the top 50 US Kids Golf Master Teachers in the nation at the time of his arrest. Set to receive the 2013 Junior Golf Leader Award from the Northern California PGA on the day following his arrest, Nisbet has since been fired from his position at the golf course.
The three known victims were all students of Nisbet’s whose ages range from 12 to 17 years old and all were male. At the time of his arrest, 175 children were enrolled in Nisbet’s junior golf program. Investigators say that Nisbet groomed his victims through a slow process, promising fame and pricey gifts, so that he could single out which children were most vulnerable. Because Nisbet also coached in Mississippi, Michigan, Alabama and North Carolina, police are urging parents to speak to their children if they have ever had any contact with Nisbet.
After his arrest, police said that Nisbet admitted to some of the crimes for which he was charged and was informed at his arrangement hearing that more charges may be brought against him in the future. He was not granted bail and is scheduled for a hearing on January 15th to the KTVU.com website
